Black lipid membranes (BLMs), first described by Mueller et al. (1963), are artificial planar bilayers formed by spreading a lipid solution (often in alkanes) across a small aperture separating two aqueous phases. The membrane appears optically “black” under reflected light due to destructive interference from its ~5 nm thin bilayer region. BLMs provide a controlled, reproducible system to study passive permeability, ion transport, and membrane protein function. The surrounding annulus of lipid solution (Plateau–Gibbs border) influences bilayer stability but contributes little to permeability. Despite being fragile and short-lived compared with liposomes, BLMs remain an important biophysical tool, enabling high-resolution electrical measurements of channel activity and mechanistic insights into membrane transport.

source of image: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Model_lipid_bilayer (2nd July 2026)
