LLC-PK1 (Lilly Laboratories Cell-Porcine Kidney 1) is a pig renal epithelial cell line derived from the proximal tubule. It forms adherent monolayers with epithelial morphology, including apical microvilli and tight junctions, and retains several functional features of tubular epithelium.

In pharmaceutical and renal physiology research, LLC-PK1 is used for studies of passive permeability, drug transport (including transfected variants, eg. P-gp overexpression), toxicity, and transporter interactions.

Limitations include that LLC-PK1 does not perfectly mimic human intestinal epithelium or the kidney in all transporter expression or regulatory mechanisms. Nonetheless, for passive permeability screens and early transporter-based assays, it offers relatively fast growth and simpler handling.

Cellosaurus: https://www.cellosaurus.org/CVCL_0391
