DLPE is a phosphoethanolamine lipid with two 12-carbon (lauric) saturated acyl chains. In hydrated conditions DLPE forms bilayers exhibiting gel-fluid phase transitions; its crystals display tightly packed chains and characteristic hydrogen bonding among head groups.

DLPE membranes are stiffer and less permeable than many unsaturated lipid bilayers due to tight acyl chain packing and limited fluidity. They are therefore used in studies exploring how membrane physical state (e.g. gel vs fluid phase) influences passive permeability and solute diffusion. While DLPE lacks the complex protein and sterol composition of biological membranes, its defined structure makes it a useful minimal model to dissect lipid-driven barriers to permeability.

SwissLipids: https://www.swisslipids.org/#/entity/SLM:000034913/, https://www.swisslipids.org/#/entity/SLM:000094117/
