Its membrane consists of apial and basolateral part that differ in membrane composition. Major lipid components of\u00a0HBMEC are POPC, SLPC, SAPC, SOPE, SAPE, SAPS, SAPI, OSM and cholesterol.<\/p>

HBMECs are specialized endothelial cells forming the inner lining of cerebral capillaries and constitute a principal component of the blood\u2013brain barrier (BBB). They are characterized by tight junctions that confer high electrical resistance and restrict paracellular flux, low pinocytic activity, and absence of fenestrae.<\/p>
These cells express transporters and efflux pumps (e.g., P-glycoprotein, BCRP) and uptake systems (e.g., GLUT-1, LAT-1), enabling selective exchange of nutrients while excluding many xenobiotics. <\/a>Tight and adherens junction proteins such as claudin-5, occludin, ZO-1, and VE-cadherin localize at cell\u2013cell contacts in HBMEC layers. <\/a>Major lipid components of\u00a0HBMEC are POPC, SLPC, SAPC, SOPE, SAPE, SAPS, SAPI, OSM,<\/a> and cholesterol.<\/p> In vitro HBMEC models (including those derived from iPSCs) allow investigation of barrier integrity, permeability, and transporter dynamics under physiological and pathological conditions.<\/p> <\/p>
