The conjunctiva is a thin, transparent mucous membrane lining the inner eyelids (palpebral conjunctiva) and covering the anterior sclera (bulbar conjunctiva), with loose folds called fornices linking the two. It comprises non-keratinized stratified epithelium with goblet cells, supported by a deeper substantia propria rich in blood vessels, lymphatics, immune cells, and accessory glands.

Functionally, it provides lubrication via mucin and tear film components, forms a physical and immunological barrier to microbes and particulates, and contributes to ocular surface homeostasis. The epithelial cells are joined by tight and adherens junctions, which limit paracellular penetration. Its permeability is higher than the cornea’s, making it relevant in topical drug delivery where both transcellular and paracellular pathways are involved.
